The name Velvet Systems suggests the goals of the company founders
to find a smooth, comfortable, efficient way to cycle. Velvet
Systems products promote comfortable and healthy cycling through
ease and ergonomics.
Velvet Systems traces its roots to the efforts of German bicyclists
and designers Klaus Schroeder and Ortwin Kurten in the mid-nineteen
eighties. Schroeder and Kurten started Velvet in Cologne, Germany
with the intention of designing bicycles that were fast and
comfortable to ride. Their first production model was the short
wheel-base Wavey. Both Schroeder and Kurten had histories as
road cyclists and had grown weary of the pain associated with
upright road riding and the highly specialized bikes needed
for the activity. Basically, road bike geometries reduce the
air resistance of a bicycle and rider by bending the bicyclist
into a crouch. Recumbent bikes reduce air resistance by leaning
the cyclist back. Not only are recumbent bikes more effective
in reducing frontal area and overall wind resistance, but the
design results in much more comfortable seating compared to
upright road bikes (for more information on the benefits of
recumbent bikes, see the International Human Powered Vehicles
Association website at http://ihpva.org From that initial mission, Velvet Systems has continued to
develop its products and its goals. Velvet's ScooterBike,
which was first produced in Germany in 1997, is the incarnation
of a desire for a versatile and easy-riding bike. Whether
it is a spin through the city or an all-day tour, the ScooterBike
is a great ride.
In 2002 Klaus Scroeder met Bob Giddens (then at Kynast) and
they spent many long evenings discussing the form and future
of mobility. When Bob started USED in 2004, ScooterBike was
the obvious product for him. The ScooterTrike was also part
of the plan. Now the ScooterBike is ready for delivery in
quantity, for the USA we have a direct "Made in Germany" solution where we send the bike to the dealer with a courier
service. As cycling changes, so will USED, ScooterBike and Klaus Schroeder.
We will continue to develop cycling based on the company ideals.
Look forward to continuing innovations from USED and Velvet
Systems.
